On October 18, Year 8 and 9 students had the privilege of attending an inspiring talk by Trevor Sterling, Senior Partner and Head of Major Trauma at Moore Barlow. Hosted by Mr. Bonecki, Head of History, and Ms. Sonigra, Head of Humanities, the event offered a unique opportunity for students to hear from a trailblazer in the legal profession. Trevor Sterling, renowned for his work on landmark cases such as the Ladbroke Grove Rail Crash and Corr vs IBC Vehicles, shared not only his professional expertise but also his personal journey. He emphasized the importance of diversity, inclusion, and self-belief, urging students to overcome challenges and embrace their individuality. Sterling's passion for advocating on behalf of others was palpable, as he recounted his decision to pursue law after starting his career as an outdoor clerk—a path that shaped his future.
The talk covered on his role as Chair of the Mary Seacole Trust, a charity promoting social equality, and his commitment to ensuring that every student has access to opportunities. Reflecting on his career, Sterling highlighted the power of seizing unexpected opportunities, even when they seem humble, and how they can lead to life-changing experiences.
Year 11 students Maya and Eva, eager to engage with such an influential figure, posed thoughtful questions during the Q&A. Maya asked about his motivation to focus on personal injury law, to which Sterling responded, "I feel both special and privileged to help those struggling with major difficulties. My work is about making a positive difference in their lives." Eva inquired about the challenges of promoting diversity in the legal profession. Sterling emphasised the importance of creating environments where everyone feels valued and encouraged schools and students to lead conversations on inclusion.
Maya Bwala summed up the impact of the talk perfectly, "To say Trevor Sterling’s speech was inspiring would be an understatement. His story showed that with perseverance and determination, everything is possible. It reminded us that our individuality is a strength, not a barrier." Trevor Sterling's message of resilience and embracing one’s unique journey resonated deeply with students, encouraging them to turn obstacles into opportunities and pursue their dreams with confidence.
