SIXTH FORM CENTRE WALL SCULPTURE COMPETITION

Jun 12, 2024

We are delighted to announce a unique and exciting opportunity for its students to leave a legacy. In celebration of the opening of the brand-new Sixth Form Centre, the school is launching a competition for students in Years 10, 11, and 12 to design a stunning wall sculpture that will adorn the front of the new building for generations to come.

This prestigious competition echoes the tradition established when a student-designed, stained-glass window was unveiled in the school library. This time, students are invited to create a large plaque design that will be transformed into a 1.2 meter by 1.2 meter ceramic tiled wall piece by a professional artist.

The theme for the competition is, ‘New Beginnings’ symbolised by the phoenix, a mythical bird that rises from its ashes to start anew. Students are encouraged to include the phoenix in their designs and may also incorporate the school crest and elements that reflect the vibrant life at Drayton Manor High School.

Technical Requirements:

Design Medium: Shaded pencil drawings on A3 paper.

Design Format: The design must be a square to fit the final 1.2-meter by 1.2-meter ceramic tile.

Shading: Use shading pencils to emphasise objects, shapes, and composition without using colour.

Submission Deadline: Monday, 1 July, 2024

Students may work individually or in teams of up to three members.

The final design will be selected by a panel of judges and will be interpreted into a ceramic relief sculpture by a professional artist. This sculpture will not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the new Sixth Form Centre but also serve as a testament to the creativity and artistic talent of Drayton Manor High School's students.

Inspiration:

Students can draw inspiration from various examples of relief sculptures, which often feature a simplified, stylised appearance. These examples can guide them in creating a design that is both visually striking and symbolic of new beginnings.

Drayton Manor High School encourages all eligible students to participate in this remarkable opportunity to contribute to the school's history and legacy. The winning design will be an everlasting symbol of creativity, resilience, and the bright future that lies ahead for the students of Drayton Manor.
