A journey from Drayton Manor to the University of Exeter
By Year 11 student reporter Ivana S
On Friday 31 January 2025, Year 11 students at Drayton Manor High School were treated to an inspiring visit from alumnus Pedro da Conceição. Having navigated his own academic journey from GCSEs to studying Law at the University of Exeter, a prestigious Russel Group University. Pedro shared invaluable insights on how to succeed, not just in exams, but in life beyond school.
Pedro's time at Drayton Manor was a springboard for his success, and he was quick to highlight how vital it is to make the most of the school’s offerings. From sports to societies, Pedro believes these activities equip students with essential skills that open doors to future opportunities. "Get involved, learn, and experience as much as you can, this is what sets you up for success," he said. His own participation in a variety of activities was crucial in preparing him for both university and his future career.
Pedro shared his strategies for staying focused and keeping a positive mindset. "Revision does not have to be a chore," he explained. "If you find joy in the process and focus on the bigger picture, it will not feel like a burden." Pedro emphasised the importance of building a revision habit early on, particularly in preparation for A-levels. "The way you approach your studies now will shape your future," he stated, highlighting how GCSE results can impact access to top universities and career opportunities. "Success is not about being the smartest person in the room, it is about consistency and effort."
Pedro gave us a glimpse into university life. He described the transition from Sixth Form to University as a significant shift. "It’s a whole new world," he shared. "You gain new perspectives, meet people from all walks of life, and discover more about yourself." Pedro also recommended students to consider studying outside of London to expand their horizons and immerse themselves in different contexts.
Pedro’s main passion, however, is Law. He spoke candidly about the realities of studying and eventually working in the legal field. "It’s nothing like the TV show Suits," he joked, before diving into the more serious side of pursuing Law. Pedro stressed the importance of researching chosen courses carefully and ensuring it aligns with goals. He also advised considering universities that are known for producing strong graduates in Law, as top law firms often recruit from specific institutions. Networking is key, he explained, and building connections early on can make all the difference.
