DRAYTON MANOR'S NEW SIXTH FORM

On Wednesday, 2 October 2024, Drayton Manor had the distinct honour of officially inaugurating its state-of-the-art Sixth Form Centre. The grand opening was graced by Drayton Manor alumnus Stephen Kinnock MP, Minister of State for the Department of Health and Social Care. 

 

Mr. Kinnock, an esteemed former student, unveiled a commemorative plaque bearing his name and shared valuable insights on the significance of education, as well as his current role within the government.

 

The morning commenced with Mr. Kinnock being escorted to the new Sixth Form Centre by the student council, a group of elected Sixth Form students representing the student body. The council led him into the modern facility, which—despite having been in use since September—was impeccably clean and radiated a welcoming atmosphere. The expansive windows allowed natural light to flood the rooms, and thoughtfully arranged greenery added a touch of vibrancy to the space, a detail that Mr. Kinnock complimented warmly. Guests were treated to fresh pastries and coffee from the centre’s café, while a talented student orchestra provided an elegant backdrop with their classical music performances.

 

In his opening remarks, Mr. Kinnock reflected fondly on his time at Drayton Manor, recalling his involvement in basketball and expressing admiration for the impressive advancements the school has made since his days as a student. Having attended from 1982 to 1988, he was struck by the modernity of the new facility, highlighting features such as the provision of laptops for students and the implementation of an electronic gate system for registration. These advancements, he noted, stood as a testament to the school's dedication to fostering an innovative and supportive learning environment.

 

Mr. Kinnock also praised the school’s enduring values—character, ambition, and civic virtue. He emphasized the importance of hard work and community spirit, describing them as essential foundations for both personal and collective success. In his address to the Year 13 students, he encouraged them to not only strive for academic excellence but also to support others and contribute to the wider community.

Drawing from his personal experience, Mr. Kinnock spoke candidly about his journey to Cambridge University after leaving Drayton Manor. He reassured the students that, while the prospect of university can seem intimidating, especially when entering elite environments, it is important to rise above those fears and aim high. His words served as both inspiration and guidance for the students preparing to embark on their own university journeys.

 

Before concluding his visit, Mr. Kinnock shared a brief overview of his objectives as a government minister, a topic of relevance to the Sixth Form students studying A-level Politics. He outlined his key priorities, including reforming the social care sector to alleviate the pressures on care workers, and expanding access to child dental care. His remarks provided valuable context for the students, offering them insight into the practical challenges and responsibilities that come with public service.

 

Mr. Kinnock expressed immense pride in the school, commending the confidence, enthusiasm, and commitment of the student body. He also acknowledged the importance of learning from the younger generation, praising their spirit and reminding everyone that the youth have much to offer in shaping the future.

 

The inauguration of the new Sixth Form Centre marks a significant milestone in Drayton Manor’s continued efforts to provide its students with an environment that fosters growth, ambition, and excellence. The school community looks forward to the opportunities the new facility will bring, and to building on the values that have long been at the heart of its success.
